on the Radio

will you marry me?

So I just saw Radio. You know. That movie where Cuba Gooding, Jr. plays a man with autism who grows up in South Carolina in 1970. Now, I'm no Sappy Sally--the last time I cried I weighed 7lbs 6 oz--but I'll say it; I was touched. And not in the way that involves rufis.
There's just something about the tender dynamics in this movie made me smile. I'm not gonna lie, Cuba. I fell in love with you a little bit. And during that one scene end of act one, when you make friends with the coach, I almost lost it. And not in the way that involves Planned Parenthood and rufis.
Overall, I found the film completely enjoyable, despite the fact I spent the first forty minutes cringe-ready waiting for someone in plaid to say "nigger."
Sigh. Nice one screenwriters. and director. and actors. except Alfre Woodard.
In an unrelated note. . .

every black woman does this. i'm doing it right now.

Let us all marvel for a moment at Eddie Murphy. Specifically, his ability to act like a stereotype while acting like a stereotype (I smell a Vibe Award). I'm not offended, but I've got to wonder at the line between being laughed at and laughed with. I mean, will there ever be a point where a morbidly obese, obnoxiously loud, domineering black woman will stop being a comedy fixture? And didn't Chappelle say something about wearing dresses?

Audible sigh.

NTS: self-marginalization is the recipe for social change.
